    Iphone question

I have been procrastinating for awhile but finally decided to update my iphone to the ios7. After downloading all afternoon and being almost fully installed it basically shut down and said it was now in recovery mode. Now it just has a picture of a cord connecting to itunes on my screen and whenever I plug it into itunes it says "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes." But if I restore it then I will lose everything.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

Been there and I lost everything, If you connected it to Itunes before you started the update and backed up the phone you should be able to restore your data.

I'm hoping it is backed up, just wanted to see if there was anything else I could do before trying to restore it

Is it possible to connect the USB to your computer and see the iPhone? Then backup everything. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but I've heard of some people that have iPhone for work, they update servers and programs at work with the operating system and it jacks up both their iPhone and MS Outlook losing files.

Restore as you suggested can wipe things clean.

When I plug it into the computer the only option I have is to restore it, it won't let me see anything.

I almost always had a problem updating over the Internet. I download first then update. Learned my lesson letting it update without downloading first.

Always update connected with the cord using iTunes.

It's a lot faster that way. My son and I started updating at the same time. I was connected to the computer and updated through iTunes. He updated via wifi. My update took about 40 minutes from start to finish, his took about 3 hours.
Also, it backs up your data before it applies any changes preventing the problem you are experiencing right now.

Did you have the phone set up to do iCloud backups?
Mine backs up whenever phone is connected to charger and on wifi, which for me is every night.

My wife's phone did the same thing. She had to get a new one. Folks at ATT said its an issue they've been having with the IPhone 4s and the new update. I have the same phone and it made it through the update.

I have gone totally to using ICloud, never had anymore issues at all. 2 iPod touch, 2 iPads and 1 iPhone.

Never ever start any update on anything without a backup first!

Always, always, always backup your phone on a computer before updating. Only 100% safe way to update.

It does backup pics if you have your phone set to back then up to iCloud. You can choose what gets backed up in your iCloud settings on your phone. Usually, though, you'll need to increase your iCloud account size if you want to backup pics. The 5gb free cloud will likely not be enough just gotta keep an eye on it, to make sure cloud is big enough.
