Hog Pit Trap- Anybody done this???

I was told about a method to trap hogs this weekend I have never considered. Basically some guys from Louisiana (I know, spare me the coon *** B.S. stories) apparently got so fed up with feral hogs they began digging pits in the ground over 4 1/2' deep and about 8-10' across with nearly vertical walls and salting the surrounding ground with corn but piling enough corn in the bottom of the hole that hogs go in after it, and cannot climb out.

He said they then dispatch of the hogs right down in the hole and just fill it in with dirt and go dig another pit to bait! Natural fertilizer.

Anybody on here ever done that? What dimensions did you use? I imagine it might be hard to do this on leased ground, but I own my tract with major hog issues and have a tractor- so thought about giving this some consideration.

It seems like the hogs would be able to knock down the sides until they were able to get out but it would be really cool if it worked

I'd say give it a try. Take pix and post up here. You might be on to something.

I agree but sounds like a new method to trick trap savy swine

Good luck digging that size and shape hole with a bucket on a conventional tractor.

I've never heard if this method. Add some hot coals and you got yourself a pig roast my friend.

A hog would just jump out. You would have to dig a lot deeper.

The places I hunt with pigs are too rocky to even dig that deep without equipment

Guy in Oakwood dug about a 10 ft hole with a back hoe he rented to dig his stock tank. Covered it with net and leaves-threw corn in the center had four in it the next morning-I cleaned 2 . His father in law thought it was illegal so filled it in.

I remember in doing this in Aransas Pass when I was younger. We would catch Javelinas in them.

                            I don't see why it wouldn't work

Probably the first hog trap man ever built, and they're legal.
