    Winch Install Question

I'm adding a Viper 4000lb winch to my Ranger tonight. I want a second battery on there to help with the load. Most of what I have found on the all-knowing internet says that I should put an isolator on the machine to separate the batteries.
I don't care to make this difficult so here's my question. Can I just add the sceond battery, wire them in series so that both of them are charged as I drive or do I have to get the isolator?
One more thing, I do not have a radio or extra lights on the machine...yet.

You wire them parallel. Not series. That would give you 24 volts. The isolator only let's the winch draw from one battery while the battery's charge together. One for the truck. One for the winch. It's so if the winch runs the battery down, the other can still run the truck. You don't need it if you just keep an eye on your charge and don't let it get low.

This ^^^^ is the way I've done it on trucks and rangers etc with no problems. Other than when one bad goes dead it will drain the other eventually. But that's after they wear down I never had a problem if the vehicle is ran so they can charge every so often

Man those Rangers must get stuck easily if you have to add another battery just for the winch.

We run our rhino parallel but don't have a winch. I have lights and stereo that draws a lot of power.

Seems like extreme overkill unless you winch a LOT.

Not really. But think. Why does a diesel need two battery's? It only needs too start the Motor. The extra battery helps with the load being pulled. You can never have too much power. Is it needed too work? No. Will it help? Sure it will.

Prob don't need it but I've seen the damage that low voltage will do. Better to have too much than too little.

I really don't think you will need the other battery as long as you leave it running while you do the winching. I have a 9000# Pierce winch on my welding rig for the gin poles and only use one battery and have had no problems and I assure you this winch runs a thousand times more than you will ever run yours.

A diesel needs two batteries because they have almost twice the engine compression of a gas engine.

However, you are correct. It can't hurt. But I have had a winch on every 4 wheeler, ranger, and jeep that I have ever owned and I have never had to add another battery.

Yeah just add a battery and parallel it.

I ran a warn 9.5 k winch on my jeep with one battery. Used it every weekend rock crawling on myself or others. Never had a problem. Regular automotive starting battery

These are awesome. I can run my boat stereo until dead then crank it up and drive away. Or leave it running to charge the second battery while the cranking battery is always fully charged.
