Chlorine Tablets for Septic System

I need to add chlorine to my aerobic system (1st time since moving into this house) and I'm not sure about the chlorine tablets that I need to get for it. Are there special tabletsfor septic systems, or will the tablets for a swimming pool work? Thanks

I have always used the pool tablets.

There are ones for septic systems, they seem to dissolve faster IMO but the septic guys seem to think they are better than the pool tablets. That being said I buy the septic ones. I get them at Home Depot.

I used the pool tablets cause I had a pool and had no issues. Something to check into, I had the tablet system changed out to a liquid bleach system and was a lot cheaper in the long run. It paid for itself pretty quick.

Your supposed to use only Cal hypo tabs in an aerobic system pool tabs are different. I also think the companies that take of those systems say it will void warranty and stuff if you use other kinds of chlorine.

I get ours at Lowes. You will also need a inspection contract on your system, that company can also supply the tabs.

We had been using pool chlorine for like 8 years but when we got the contract with our current company, they told us you aren't supposed to... Something about the concentration or type not supposed to be used in a closed system... Said it could cause the tanks to "explode" I don't know how true that is but they didn't really have any reason to lie about it because we paid the $250 to switch over to a liquid bleach system and don't have to worry about the tablets anyway now... It's paid for itself about 10 times over in the past 7ish years... I think they're more expensive now though...

This is not true. There used to be a law that you had to have a maintenance/inspection contract but due to companies getting contracts and doing nothing, it was removed as a requirement. If it's been in place for two years, a homeowner can maintain it themselves without a contracted service.

^^ this. Used pool chlorine without any problems though. Look into having your current contractor install the bleach system. Cost was $150. A bottle of bleach is cheap, it saves you money in the long run.

That is interesting news Casey, I wasn't aware of it. I may go down that route myself - about to be out of the contract.

Where do you put the tablets? The PVC pipe inbetween the 2 tank holes? Or is there a spot they go in under one of the big covers?

I do my own home inspections. Grayson county has allowed this for a few years now, but a course is/was required to do this.
I use pool tabs in mine, guy I took the class from said it was no big deal. I have a bleach chlorinator my neighbor built me that I plan on using when I run out of chlorine tabs. Is pretty simple, made out of pvc. Just put bleach in it and adjust the drip on it.
