normally it is a 4" opening at the flange and connects to a 3" PVC... but some older homes have 4" pvc pipe for sewer.

I have never messed with it. I still like using wax rings

Paging Ty729...... Clean up on Aisle 9 please

I just had a piece of line replaced in my bathroom while I also replaced the flange and toilet, it was all 3".

So far all correct info but this seems to cover it very well.

                  3" or 4" will work

With modern water saver toilets a 3" main horizontal drain line is best. Goes against most of the old established thoughts of bigger is better.

The vertical drop from the floor flange to the 90 degree turn is best to use 4". Gets stuff out of the toilet better which is the most common issue with the new commodes.

Did you buy the toilet from the classifieds section? I think that makes a difference
