    Open day/ First Gobbler

Saturday, The Texan, The general, and I set out to go get some turkey's. Started off before day break on a ridge line where the turkeys roost. Started calling and talking with the hens. Turkeys were responding but when it was time to fly down from the roost they flew on other side of creek from us. So we picked up and headed towards them. As we got on other side of creek we spotted the group. Got decoys in place and started calling. Unfortunately about 10 minutes into calling our bulldozer guy drives up and scares the turkeys off. We knew he would be there about 8:15 and hints why we tried to get the turkeys to come to us on the ridge line field. Luckily we were able to catch them around the corner and watch the direction they were heading. We decided to try and loop in front of them and try to cut them off. Got to the spot and called but nothing. After a bit we decided to go a little further in front of them and then head back towards the bulldozer spot. As we were heading back we saw to toms in the road and they saw us. They started to get off road so we followed. As we got closer we jumped 6 turkey or so to our right and they got up and flew right over us. When the general and the Texan were focused on those birds above us I decided to walk towards were we saw the two toms. As I got by the creek the first tom flew off the hillside right in front of me. Then the second tom followed behind it. As a duck hunter my instincts kicked in and I shoulder my shotgun. Took the first shot at the turkey at about 25 yards and 12-20 feet off the ground. It took some bb's and went down. Right when it hit the ground it got up to run off. I took a second and final shot. Turkey was dead. Never have had a chance to turkey hunt but got to say it was one of the most exciting hunts I've been on. Although I got my first one, I'm ready to get back out to shoot another. Maybe next time I will get one that comes to the decoys instead of in the air.
