That was my initial thought..but the one at my in laws house had broader darker leaves

I would bet it it a
Ligustrum
as well. I believe there are a number of varieties, but the link looks pretty similar.

Yup. Ligustrum. Very invasive in Texas. Kill it. If you cut it down it will come back. Poison it with the good stuff. I kill acres of the stuff every year around the state. It will choke out natives and create monocultures. Nasty freaking plant.
