I've not shot the Ruger or the 7-08 for that matter but my oldest son has an .223 Axis that I bought him. I had the barrel cut down and recrowned, I really like the rifle. I need to do the trigger mod but one of the action screws is stripped (bought it used) and I'm afraid I can't get it out without messing up the stock. I really like the gun though and have wanted one in 7-08.

The Savage Axis (at least the youth model) is decent gun for the price but....
1. It has an awful trigger.
2. The magazine is plastic and the tab that secures if feels like it could snap off at any moment.
3. The bolt/action is so stiff that it basically makes ours a single shot for the kids.

I bought my son an Axis 7mm.08 two years ago. He shoots it pretty well, but the trigger is awful. Love that caliber in ANY rifle, though.
