Request for help - Lufkin/Diboll TBhers

This weekend my boys, ages 5 and 7, and I are planning to canoe camp on the Neches. We are putting in at the Hwy 94 bridge, camping in the DCNF AC WMA, and mama is picking us up at the 59 bridge the next day. I scouted the river earlier this winter and have just about everything planned that I can. Food, gear, first aid, emergency pick up points, GPS. Weather looks great, let this weekend so the only thing that could stop us is the river level. When I scouted in January, the river gauge near Diboll was 10.5ft. The river gauge yesterday was 6.5ft. I have no idea whether this is a significant change with respect to the navigability of the river.

If any Lufkin/Diboll area TBHers happen to cross the river on Hwy 94 or 59 or anywhere in between, could you please take a quick pic and shoot it to me? Or if you have any experience on the river to give me a better idea on whether the river is high enough for a successful adventure, I would really appreciate it.

My boys are pretty tough for their age, but I don't want our trip to be burdened by repeated portages across low areas.

    Many many thanks in advance.

Hmm. I'm not real familiar with the 94 to 59 section but I hunt between 59 and hwy 69 and 6.5 at Diboll is pretty low. A section of river that is really good to paddle is the Angelina from bevel port then camp around the forks of the Angelina and the Neches and paddle on down to hwy 190 the next day. You need a free permit to use the primitive camp sites along the river but they are free. Pm if your interested in the info.
Good luck. Paddling the rivers is a great weekend

Great! Thanks. I talked to a guide this afternoon and he said the same. I'm just not quite sure on the downed trees or other unforseen obstacles. Only way to confirm though is to get out there and find out.
