hog shot placement with a bow?

i have only killed a few hogs and all of the ones i shot behind the shoulder.
i was talking to someone the other day and he swears by shooting them in the center of the neck. he says they drop in their tracks every time.
has anyone ever tried the neck shot??? if not where do you usually aim with a bow???
behind the shoulder in the shoulder....etc???

If i have a rifle, i always take the neck shot. No tracking needed, they just roll right over. Now a bow, personally never took a neck shot on one, so i can't say if it would or wouldn't work. I'll just keep to what i know what works, behind the shoulder...

...right in the armpit, through the heart, into my cooler the little piggies go.

The neck shot is not a option for me. The only way to drop a pig in it's tracks with a neck shot is to spine them. On a broadside shot I aim for the front shoulder on the lower 3rd of the pig just above the elbow. The pig in the pic below was slightly quartering away otherwise I would have tried to put the arrow about 2 inches to the left.

The neck shot is hard with a bow. Study the anatomy and you'll see the spine drops down low at the neck.

Far and away, the best shot is quartering away behind the shoulder. The vitals are farther forward than one would think. Aim low and you'll not have far to track. I have lost several shooting the typical "behind the shoulder, broadside". They bleed for 300 yards, running through the thickest mess and then the blood trail just stops.

You can get away with some maginal shots on the smaller ones, but the big ones have the shoulder plate guarding the vitals. But if your up to it, the head shot drops 'em every time. I have had them facing me thru the entire meal and I had to take it. Makes a sweet sound too.

            Good luck

right where the heart is, right in the shoulder lower third. The only way you will kill a hog with a bow shot in the neck is if you hit the spine (small target). jmo

When you think you are aiming low, go lower.

If I am hunting in a briar patch or around water, I usually shoot them right behind the ear. Otherwise, we shot in the arm pit. One of the cool things about hog hunting is that you can get close enough to make very specific shots like behind the ear. I would try more behind the ear than in the middle of the neck. The the first 2 vertebrae of a hog's neck are larger than the vertebrae in the middle of the neck. However, do what is comfortable to you!

I do not recommend a neck/spine shot attempt. It is just too risky, and is not a shot designed to fall within the normal kill mode of archery equipment. Archery equipment is specifically designed to kill by hemmoraging, not breaking spine/bone. It has been my experience that if you tuck the arra tight against the front leg and as low as possible, you'll have a clean quick kill. The heart in a hog is a small target too, and it is Low, Low, Low in the chest as well as forward. I've seen my dad and grandfather stick no telling how many domestic hogs with a knife to kill them for butchering in my lifetime and have stuck a few myself, and if you shoot a hog right at the front leg and your arrow is high enough to get the broadhead inside the chest cavity, it will be a lethal and quickly lethal with a good blood trail. In most cases, if you just cut it deeply at the brisket, that will be lethal too by cutting the major vessels in the area.
