    Transmission flush

I bought a 2005 Chevy crew cab 1500 Z71 with 79000 miles on it. Now have 85000 and I want to get the transmission serviced. I do not have service records but I got an oil change at Christian bros in San Antonio and they recommended a flush and filter change. I have heard both good and a lot of bad about flushing a transmission. I am leaning toward just dropping the pan and replacing filter and the fluid that is lost. Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I would just drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid.

I'm manage a fleet of over 400 vehicles and we have our own maintenance crew and my shop foreman insists that we flush. He says that so much fluid is left in the converter, cooler and lines that is just make sense for the little added cost to get out the most old fluid you can. IMO

That's what I've always done. I'm no mechanic though.

I flushed my 2003 back in 2009 and it made a huge difference.

They guys who change my oil always try to sell me that. I've got 145K miles and if it makes a difference in ???, I may do it as well.

Flush and filter change is ideal... The flush you get it all out of the torque converter and all the crud

Same here. They try to sell me new belts and air filters I don't need. I have never had a transmission flushed and I have had several trucks go over 200k.

Sorry to hijack and I wouldn't flush.

Anybody know of a top notch tranny crew in the Fort Worth area? Need to get a pan dropped, oil sucked out and filter and gasket changed. It's for a Chevy Tahoe.

At 150,000 on a perfectly food running truck I had the fluid flushed and no kidding three months later I had to buy a new transmission. Also did the same on a car with 170,000 and it ran horrible after. With that said I had a dodge get 253,000 without ever flushing the transmission and I gave the truck back to my dad who put many more miles on it before deciding to upgrade. I will never do it again

I have mine flushed every 55000 or so because I pull a lot of heavy stuff and I believe it helps. If you Havnt done it in the 1st 100k I would say don't do it as the detergents in the new stuff can be hard on seals and stuff that Havnt been exposed to it before.

I've never had a transmission fail in any of our trucks that have had it done on this schedule, and have had them fail on a few others that have not. Im a little behind the times on light duty trans's, but I know they are a weak link in every American made truck but the Allison, and I have it done on my Allison's because that thing costs 5 grand.

The auto tranny is a strange animal, all I really know is that fresh juice and keeping them cool does more good than anything....besides a neck breaker shift kit.

Here's the way I do them and my educated opinion

Drain pan and change filter. The filter is the only thing that gets restrictive. Without the fluid the transmission gets over heated. Restrictive filter = more heat. The fluid flush is a waste of fluid in my book. The trash in the fluid is just clutch material and that material does help the clutches engage. Let the filter do its job. Even a flush machine will not get all the old fluid out of the transmission and its cooling system. Some places flushes do not involve a filter change.

However having it done regularly and or by the factory recommended intervals is ideal for long life.
