How would you go about getting it started? I know what companies i would want to pitch the idea to. But would I need to have the idea/product patented first?

Otherwise one of the companies will just have a vision of the perfect product and take it to market. When you try to file lawsuit they'll claim they don't know you and never heard of you before.

Might ask some of the atty's on here to assist you on this.
Have you done a patent search for prior art?

Depends on how tough it is to get the patent reviewer to stop rejecting it.
Each rejection cost dollars.
Intellectual Property patents can run 10's of thousands of dollars.
Design patents can be less.
Good Patent Attorneys are expensive.

absolutely have to get the patent.. but keep in mind it will cost you probably a minimum of 10k for the patent because you have to get a patent lawyer to make sure it's patentable.. then go through the paperwork and all that. I had a friend that was able to get one done for about 8k, while I've worked with a company that spent well over 15k to get theirs.
You also have to have something like machine drawings or something physical. can't just be an idea.
If you don't get that and then take it to a company they can take your idea.
You still have to be careful though because just having a patent doesn't do much for you especially if they can modify it enough to take it out of patent.
Basically a patent just gives you the right to sue someone over infringement which is not only a long process but an extremely expensive one.
The best route would be that you find a manufacturer and draw up a contract that they agree to not produce it for anyone else.. Make sure your patent is stamped on whatever it is, from there produce large quantities and take them to retailers that might want to sell it.
As opposed to trying to sell the patent to a bigger company. Lots of people go into it thinking like that, but the reality is something entirely different.
first things first.. get a patent lawyer.

I've actually had a company try to sell me a patented product like that but wanted me to sign a NDA.. So they sent this huge thing to me I started reading realizing that a lawyer drew it up and basically they can write all kinds of garbage in it..
So I had to turn it over to my lawyer when I realized I don't care what this guy has..
Of course he was quick to say nevermind and show it to me anyway, but just keep it in mind..
A big company is not going to go through a big legal hassle just to see an idea some random guy came up with and says is good.
