I am located in between Royse City and Terrell, very sandy soil with mostly Post Oaks around me. After extensive research, and that its mostly if not all occurring on the SW corner of the tree, it looks like it was sun scalded during the temperature swings in the winter as some of you had already stated.

Would you recommend planting the Shumards within 75ft of my house? Wondering how they hold up during ice storms.
Interesting that you ask this question. I was very concerned about my Shumards in the front yard during the last two ice storms(one doesn't shed its dead leaves until spring). They came through with flying colors as did most of the other Shumards in the neighborhood.

I was very surprised how poorly the Live Oaks in the area fared(they got hammered).....actually more were damaged than the Maples and pizz poor/weak wood Bradford Pears.
