Yes it will go bang, yes you can hit stuff at 10 yards with it but there is no way you should recommend this gun to people for a defense weapon. 100 rounds at 10 yards? That's not a real test, that's a time waster. Go soak that Hi Point in water, throw dirt on it then burn through 500 rounds, that's a test.
i have seen people test the hipoint in that manner and have had no problems,
IV8888 did such a video so did NutnFancy. yes there is no comparison but its definately better than no gun. if somebody you know needs a gun for defence and doesnt make money thats the first gun they should turn to. i have all of the major brands of handguns except Kimber and glock, i just dont like them, its personal preference. my Hi-point has not failed me. ive shot more than 500 rounds thru it, i only had problems with winchester white box and i know im not the only one here. its not something to show off but its does what its designed to do.

I have a 9 and a 40 I bought for $250 brand new for the pair last year.

I keep them around for when one of my "city" friends wants to go shooting(basically making a bunch of noise while not hitting a thing), and they've done alright for that purpose. And that purpose only. I don't cry if they drop it, bang it up, scratch it, etc.

Maybe 2500 rounds through each, the 9mm is at the factory right now, the .40 has been there twice already. They're ok if you want to make a bunch of noise and learn how to ship and receive a firearm, but I'd never trust my life on one.

why have they been going back to the factory?

This is not a high quality gun. It is a throw down gun you can have for a gun you don't want to worry about getting banged up or stolen. Tom Deebs never made any claim to producing a high quality gun; he has always said he produces an "economical" gun for that market. I have seen some half eaten up with acid from a meth lab and it still work, but it is not a gun I would keep for a "go-to" gun.
It is heavy because no matter the caliber, it is simple blow-back recoil operated. With larger calibers, the only way to safely manage the recoil with simple blow-back is to add weight to the slide.
Boat, tackle/ tool box, or camp house type gun IMO. Probably a good snake gun.

Just paid $182.65 for a Hi-Point .40. Pick it up when I get home from Afghanistan.

I have a 995ts carbine and have shot 1500 rds through it with not a singe problem. Not a looker, but shoots great and I trust its reliability. I haven't had experience with their pistols, but would definitely recommend the carbine to anyone who wants a fun gun to shoot. Also, can't beat hi-points warranty service.

For me and mine, we carry Glocks.

A Huffy bicycle will get you to the Quick-E-Mart just as good as a quality Trek/Specialized/Giant. But will it get you there year after year? Probably not. At that price point, too many corners have to be cut.

I have been catching up on some old podcast's of Cable's and he interviewed the owner STI back in 12'. What a great company by the way. STI is an empolyee owned company, and he said that the best is still not good enough for him. He says what makes that company great is that his employees care about what they send out of there. It's a sense of pride that won't allow them to send junk out the door.

My point in bringing this up, is if you source the cheapest labor and cheapest materials, and the cheapest standars you'll get a cheap product. Cheap and quality can't be put in the same sentence. It rings true for everything out there. You put on cheap tires, you replace them at 20k, put on Michelin's and you replace them at 70k.

I understand owning one for a plinking gun, or something to shoot the pigs in a trap with. But if you had the choice would you really pick a Hi-Point over a S&W, Glock, Sig, Ruger, etc. to actually protect you. Failure of a defense pistol is not an option.

Having said all this, I HAVE shot one. It was indeed ugly, and didn't fit my hand very well. But it did go bang. Still not for me. Glad your happy with your purchase though, that's really all that matters. Congrats.

                      Always the haters.
I've had a 9mm Hi-Point for about eight years and it shoots great and has not given me ONE problem. I keep it in my Jeep and shoot it all the time, in fact I'll be shooting it this weekend. My buddy had the .45 and he LOVED it...until someone stole it.
I've seen youtube videos where they have put them in mud puddles, sand, water, run them over with a truck and beat them with a sledgehammer and it still didn't fail.
                      To each his own, fellas.

                        Score one for Hi-Point

Take a look at this one... covered in rust and still got the job done.

I like the 45 pistol and 9mm carbine. The only problem I've had was using aftermarket magazines in the carbine.

I have really had a lot of fun reading so many responses to my post. In fact, amazed at the comments many times. I do like Staton's post..."To each his own." ANY manufacturer has problems time to time, but it would seem MOST jam's are the result of improper firearm maintenance many times. But, I am sure the initial models had their fair share of bad experiences, Hi Point that is. I also could provide a few testimonials from a few that MOST of us would consider firearm, ballistic experts....but I'm sure their opinions would be just that to some TBH members...just opinions! Anyway, not trying to sell this product, just being "non-biased" to a product that seems to get a bad rap too much! Be safe my friends...

I think I'll buy one in 45ACP. American company that has favorable reviews. Great way to get someone shooting and then they can move into something more expensive.
