Looking for a Quality Timber Company to thin some Pines

My dad and I together have about 40 acres in Harrison County. We need to get the timber THINNED ONLY. I would like to do it early so it will not affect deer season next year. I would like to schedule a time to walk the property with someone to get it evaluated. Please provide any recommendations. Thanks.

    Ha!

This is awesome! Thanks for starting my day with a laugh!

I hate timber companies with a passion - last time I sat out there and counted trucks and trees....they still tried to screw me......

Hope you find a good one!

I know a good one in Clarksville, his name is Forest Roreback. I will check and see if I have his number.

What size trees are these? Pulpwood sized or saw timber? Do you know how old the stand is?

You should get ahold of the Texas Forest Service in Marshall for a list of timber buyers. I recommend getting at least 3 bids

I need to know more before i can suggest anything. First of all, like Nova said, is it pulp or saw timber? There is a big difference; pulp will be a row thin or similar, while if sawtimber, i would suggest a marked timber thinning operation so only the trees you want taken out, are taken out.

As to what Fred said about going through a timber buyer system with multiple bids will help to assure you get a fair market value.

Third is make sure the contract with the logger is thorough and does not have gaps that let him take more than he is supposed to.

The Texas forest service has a list of timber buyers and a list of loggers they can provide but it is illegal for them to recommend one over any others on the list. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Also i believe froggy is a retired forester and may be able to give you a recommendation.

I really don't know. None of them are large trees. A lot died off after the drought in 2011. The contract piece is of concern to me for items like the fence and if they have to cross the creek some type of crossing will have to be put in. I believe the trees are about 20 yrs old now. They were not planted. My dad calls them bull pine. And I definitely do not want any hardwood cut.

I'm waiting on bids from two guys now and have another coming to look at our places in Smith County on Friday. Unfortunately, it's an almost necessary evil. I've seen the damage they can/will do to a tract. You have to stay on them... and they'll still try to screw you, as Rod mentioned above.

ETA: whereabouts in Harrison County? I have contact with a guy out of Shreveport that manages quite a bit of acreage in HarrCo... he may take a look at it. I don't know the guy very well, but he seems pretty stand -up.

Texas Forestry guy came out last week and we walked the property. It is a total of 35 acres that need to be selectively thinned. He gave me a list of consultants. He said he could not recommend any. I don't live there, so, my dad is calling a couple that are closer to Waskom. Many of them are far from the local area. A couple from Marshall, Shreveport, Lindale. My biggest concerns are to get it done well before hunting season if possible, keep all of my trails and roads clean and don't damage the fence. Would also like 2 creek crossings but I know that is asking too much.

My brother has had trouble getting anyone to cut that small amount of acreage for several years near Lake Palestine. They would also tell him they would come if they had another job close to his area....but never did. I don't know if that is still true or not.

The forester that looked at the timber said it is small but we should be able to find someone who would be willing to thin it. He did mention your exact thoughts.
