    Getting started in 3D

Looking for something to do in the off season, and want to try my hand at 3D archery. I have no experience in a 3D competition setting, I have never even shot at a 3D target. I live in the middle of nowhere, but I am within an hour and a half of Bastrop, San Antone and Austin, and I have seen posts about 3D shoots in those places. My question is, is there anything I need to know or need to do before I show up? Or do I just show up, sign up, and shoot? Don't want to show up and look like too much of an idiot.

    Thanks,
    KP

austin shoot is pretty much show up, sign up, shoot!

there is a shoot at Austin Archery Club this weekend. Sunday morning. I always thought it was always show up and shoot. I hope it is... I have not yet been to one and want to start.

Mike Smith is the ASA rep for the 3D group here in Texas. He is on the 3D forum all the time. He can answer any questions you may have about competitive 3D. We are a very large organization and we have shoots all over the state. State this year is in Houston at Buffalo Archery Club. Just go to the 3D forum on here and take a look, you will see all things 3D.

If you're going for the 1st time, I'd suggest you reach-out by phone or email to the club president, say you're coming to you're 1st 3d shoot and would like to meet him, and appreciate if he can get you into a group so show a 1st-timer how much fun it is. Be sure to bring water bottles and snacks with you since you'll be hiking all over the place. If you bring a bag a jerkey and share with the group you'll have a bunch of new friends by the end.

80% of 3d is you ability to estimate distances, 20% how well you can shoot at a known distance. Scoring rings on the targets are not in the true hunting locations, you can argue that or bring binoculars. No range finders allowed on the shoots in most clubs.

There's different levels of serious. Very serious is when you count one guy's strides in the group in front of you as they walk from the shooting stake to the target, and then convert that into yardage when you shoot the target and find out how far it is. So 38 of his steps in 30 yards, etc.

Have fun. Join the club to get involved, or to only support their range's operations budget with your dues. I got into it years ago, and I'll tell you if you want to really learn archery join the club and get on the board. Every year I try to step down as Secretary and when nobody else wants the job and the incoming board members beg me to stay (and our club pres is a blonde) I say, ok what the heck.
