The Ford 6.0 (2003.5-07) is the one that most will tell you to stay away from. Some never have problems, but most of them seem to. They can be bulletproofed, but it's expensive. The Ford 6.4 (08-2010) has a bit better track record.
The pre-03.5 Ford 7.3s and pre-08 Dodge 5.9 Cummins' are the hot ticket diesels right now. They're known as the most reliable, but can cost an arm and a leg.
If you're looking for 2011+, Ford's 6.7 seems to beat Ram's 6.7 in just about every category.

Start with what your budget is first and then go from there, if you can afford and want to spend the money id say get the F250 with the 6.7 if your looking used then it all depends on the $ you want to spend IMO
Edit: just saw where I missed the used part so again i say start with what your budget is. From what I have and between my friends and family id say Dodges need transmission work and ford 6.0 needs mods under the hood but once done correctly either is a good truck..... A good low mileage 7.3 is going to be hard to find for cheap but if you want reliability id say go with thatLast edited by Spoken0313; 02-03-2014, 11:39 AM.

The 1997 through 2003 7.3 ford powerstroke. They are out there, hard to find but worth the price. Not to mention the trucks themselves hold up. I have two of them, never been in the shop for the motor or tranny and they have 230k and 305k miles on them. Workhorses. My only issue with the cummings from those years was the body of the truck holding up in the field. Good luck.

7.3- pros: were good motors
cons: there old....period. stuff wears out after 12 years of anything
6.0- I had great luck with mine. Pros: cheap cause most are scared to death of them
cons: cost a fortune to fix if broke. IF you can get one cheap enough, take savings and bomb proof it and you will have a beast.
6.4- I currently have. Pros: Good power. Cons: Obama got involved. I may/may not have took some "parts" off........now get 19mpg and just shy of 800hp. But it will cost you up front, but save you in years to come.
6.7- f-i-l has. Lots of factory power, no issues so far. Cons: lots of junk on the emmision stuff that could go out, + exhaust fluid hassle. and $$$$$$$$ up front.
Dodge 5.9, great engine in an not so great body, a/c issues, front end issues
After that not a fan of later models.
Find something the government hasnt messed with and your good to go!
We have had great luck with duramax....we have an 01' thats only had close to $80K in repairs and an 08' that would die if you hooked a trailer to it for the first 2 yrs. and eats injectors, seats have fell apart in under 100K and whole truck rattles worst than any dodge I've been in

Just buy a 11+ ford 6.7.
I have an 08 duramax that has treated me like it's a dodge. Engine runs great, no issues. The rest of the truck always has some tiny issue popping up that just irks me.
My next one will be a 6.7 ford, but I'm really liking this debt free thing, so it will be a long while.
