bought a new truck. found a camper shell i want to put on it. but its the wrong color. want to get it painted but don't want to spend a ton of money. if I'm gonna do that, id just buy a new shell the color I want. anybody have an idea what it would cost to paint a fiberglass camper shell? i wouldn't figure it would be too much. heck, its glass on 4 sides. real, all that needs to be painted is the top and 4 corners. and a little above and below the windows.

Zach and I painted the top for his Blazer ourselves and actually used rollers rather than spray. Just cur the paint with 50% thinner and rolled it on. When it's that thin, the bubbles will poo and it self-levels. Took several coats with some light sanding between (after the first three coats). Came out looking great (not show quality, bur plenty nice). Spent less than $100.

If you're into DIY, while I never did it myself, here's what I'd do.
Wash the top really well with a degreaser/ cleaner.
Dry well.
Wipe it down with denatured alcohol and a rag. Wear rubber gloves.
Masking tape off windows, etc.
Spray with automotive primer intended for painting plastic body parts and chrome bumpers. It really makes the paint adhere better. Follow directions for when you top coat.
Get spray cans of automotive paint in color you want. Read instructions. The first coat should barely cover the top. Next coat gives coverage. Another light coat. Better to do 4 light coats than 1 heavy first and get runs.
Do a clear top coat of automotive spray paint.
Maco would be easier.

Alls I can say is you're gonna be sorry you got that "really short bed"! Especially after you having the longer bed trucks before this one... I hated that gold Chevy I turned into the ranch truck... I went from a full 8 foot bed to that little peanut 5 1/2 footer... Heck, I couldn't even put enough corn in it to fill feeders on the ranch without making 2 or 3 trips.

Originally posted by Kdub View Posti went from an 8' bed to a 6 1/2' on my new truck. It takes some getting used to. I bought a ARE brand camper cover from Johnson GT covers on 45 around Almeda rd. I had to order it and wait about a month but they matched the paint perfectly from their factory.

I think those guys also sell used ones. At least they used to. I've bought a couple Tonneau covers from them. They always treated me right... were the cheapest too last time I had to do that sort of shopping. I have heard both good and bad reviews on them though. I never had a problem with them... probably worth a stop to check 'em out.
