Yep cash in hand at a public location is the only way I'll do business on CL.
Yep. I prefer to do most of my craigslist dealings inside of a bank. Not many lowlifes are going to try something in a bank, and you can deposit your money after the sale to make sure you're not a target coming out.
I have not had a bad buying/selling experience with CL, but I've always been careful.
I ignore the obvious scammers, all transactions face-to-face and cash only. I would never go into a building or home unless armed.
I have met in 'neutral' places like a Starbucks in a small shopping center to buy a used iPhone (duck hunting water damage to mine). I will let buyers come to my home if I speak with them first by phone, and then the item is on my driveway and my garage door is closed. The nearest public bathroom in 3 miles away in the Burger King.
Paypal is the safe way to do business. But, a lot of the power is weighted towards the buyer. They'll send you legit funds on Paypal, then say the item was damaged or not what was described and Paypal will revoke the funds. Thus, the buyer is left without any money or the item. Paypal's stance is that you, the seller, are responsible for getting your items back.
The biggest thing that tipped me off was the fact that A - the first thing he said was he didn't care about condition (everyone cares about the condition) B - he was buying it for a friend. And C - he has a New York area code. I've already had my account on PayPal hacked once and they bought 300 dollars worth of international posted to Russia.
And when they say they want to send a friend to pick up the item after they send you a paypal payment, just tell them to have their friend have the money in hand when they come get the item...usually don't hear from them again.
