I have never been pleased with an aftermarket warranty. Nowadays I just try to get the dealership to throw in an extended warranty. I don't feel so bad when they don't cover stuff if I didn't pay for it.

Somebody in the car biz can correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, there is one, maybe two companies that offer all the extended warranties - they are just marketed differently - through dealerships and aftermarket. Years ago I bought one through a buddy that was parts and service manager at a local dealership. Apparently it is (or can be) a very high margin item for the dealership - they mark it up as high as they can get away with. If I remember right, he sold me a warranty at close to his cost for about $900. When offering it to new car buyers, they try to get $1,600 for the same warranty. In my case it paid off when I had to get a complete tranny rebuild.

I don't do extended warranties either-except on tires. I used to do so, but after 3-4 new cars with extended warranties, I did an analysis and it was perfectly clear that they are not needed. Put that money in savings and it'll be there when you need it--if you never need it (and you probably won't) it's yours and not in the warranty company and dealer's pocket.

I bought them twice. Once on a used ranger, I had to have the transmission rebuilt, so it paid off. Other time on a Toyota, it was precertified so was through Toyota, but I had to have transmission and radiator replaced, so it was worth it.

I've got in-laws that do this for a living. They generally say to buy gap coverage with a new vehicle, and forgo the warranty.

If you are buying a used vehicle with no warranty (and are financing it) then you should get the after market warranty.

I know when I bought my wife's new Honda van last year they started off around $1,300 for the extended warranty. By the time we got done with the back and forth I paid $295 for an extra 50,000 miles added to the factory warranty. It takes a while but you can get them down to where it is worth it.

if you still have an existing warranty, check into the Ford ESP warranty.
little known fact is they will warranty other brands also.

Ha! You are silly if you think you didn't pay for it.... dealership doesn't give anything away for free....

I got one for my truck about 2 years ago. Check engine light came on, they wouldn't cover it, I cancelled it and got my refund and used that money to pay to get the truck fixed.

You can also buy a Ford ESP from any authorized dealership. When I got mine several years ago (on my Superduty), I shopped around online, bought it through a Lincoln dealership in Salem MA and saved ~$900. They entered it into Ford's mainframe, and sent me the paperwork within a week. I never had any problems taking the truck to any Ford dealer.
