A Salivary Stone??? Anyone Ever Heard of This?

So I got in to see the Dr. today about the problem I posted with my swollen lymph node. Turns out I have a salivary stone . With much love , my father handed kidney stones down to me, but this was a first. Salivary stones? Needless to say, I've read quite a bit about them on the net since I got home.

Anyone ever had one? Hurts like...... !!

Never heard of them, but if they hurt half as bad as a kidney stone I feel for ya.......

Yep... Not very long ago the side of my face swelled up like a balloon and I started running a fever. My jaw hurt so bad that I thought I was going to lose it right off of my face.

Some people end up in the hospital with them... Luckily the antibiotics and time took and a good massage every day helped me get through it. Oh, and a lot of pain pills

          How do you "pass" it?

Dr. said it will eventually just be forced out by the flood waters of saliva building up behind it .

Luckily, I have some pain killers to help the time pass (no pun intended).

The doctor told me to massage my cheek everyday, even if painfull to get the saliva ducts flowing. Also, he told me not to eat or drink anything that will dehydrate you. Suck on some lemon drops to increase saliva flow.

Is it similar to a kidney stone in that it is shaped like a grass bur?

That does not sound like fun. Good luck.

Don't know, but it hurts just as bad as one!

Somewhat similar. He said he's seen salivary stones be the size of peas .

I'm praying that's not the case for me.

If it needs to be massaged, I think the doc should write you a script for at least one every day...and it should start down at your toes and work all the way up to your salivary glands. At least that would help ease the discomfort 'til it passes!

This is from Wikipedia- don't shoot the messenger. These things look painful. I survived gall stones, have 4 of 'em in a plastic bag after they were taken out.

Salivary duct calculus is a concretion of mostly calcium mineral salts (calculus) that forms within the ducts. This calculus (sialolith - pronounced SIGH-al-low-lith) is a salivary gland stone consisting of layers of calcified organic matter - calcium phosphate and carbon, with traces of magnesium, chloride and ammonium.
