Just shoot me a PM if you do. I'll check with my customers in the DFW area to what is available.

regardless what your degree says, or what you think your career path should be. pick a job that YOU LIKE. it is so easy to wake up every morning and go to a job that you enjoy. makes the day so much easier. nothing worse than draggin your butt outta bed and forcing yourself to go to a suck @$$ job that u hate. a wise man once said, "pick a job you love and you will never work a day in your life" money aint everything.

btw, i hate my job! well, let me rephrase. I like the work, like the people. I hate the BS and politics. Oh, and the 110 mile round trip commute!

You are starting off right, do not get locked down in a job you don't like while your a young man. You will enjoy your life a lot more doing something you love and care about. That's one reason I stay in safety, I love my work and my job.

Just a little insight to law enforcement.

[QUOTE=curtintex; It isn't all about money. If you don't enjoy your job, no money is enough. If you love your job, then you'll never feel like you're working.[/QUOTE]

Red these words /\ /\ /\ over and over, and repeat them to yourself. They are TRUE! Money can't buy happiness if you are mired in misery due to your job, your boss, your co-workers, your address, etc.

I had one job/assignment during my 30 year army career that I despised--due to just about everything but my boss--and looking back on it, it turned out to be one of my "growing" assignments. But, in the Army, you know things are going to change every 2-3-4 years so it's easier to suck it up. If you are in industry/retail/banking, etc, then you may not be able to see or even believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks to everybody for all the advice. I decided to call my dad and really talk about it. He has been a cop for 30 years and has seen pretty much everything. He went over all the good and all the bad, and we talked about the fact that since I live 5 hours from my home town, I will probably be going back once I can get my fiancé to move from Dallas. For now I am just going to make sure my fiancé and I have our ducks in a row, and I'll keep up to date on what I need to do to join a PD of my choosing. Also, the fact I'm gettin married in November means starting in LEO would be difficult around that time. For now I get to bide my time and make sure I make the right choice not only in career but where that career starts.

Go to the academy BEFORE you get married if possible.

I would do that, but I don't think I want to be in the DFW area after we get married, so I need to wait until we decide where we will live to get into am academy, so that will not be able to happen until after we get hitched

Stay away from retail, you will not have any time for you or your family but you will make good money but money is not everything. I spent 23 years in retail management, now unemployed but I enjoy being away from it. I have been happier ever since I left, now I am looking for another career path. Good luck.

I got married and bought a house while going through a 7 month Field training program. The academy was easy compared to the field training. It was a very stressful time but it just makes it that much better when your done. You never know until you try the job and get real experience if you like being in law enforcement. It truely is one of those jobs that you can make it what you want, you just have to want it.

The sad thing is I've heard this even from the other managers I work with now. Get out while you can, which I will. Like I said, I just have to sit down with my other half and hash out the details

I know that my posts may be excessive on the subject, but today was a pretty big day for me in regards of making my career choice. I was able to really talk with my fiancé about the fact police officers cannot simply transfer, they have to start from the bottom, which means we have to figure out a long term plan. I have pretty much made up my mind about going into police work, and I know it is the right thing for me. I always wanted to be like my dad, because he has always loved his job, and I want that. Being a cop is the only career that has actually caught my attention as a long term career, so I believe I am making the right choice. My fiancé isn't excited about the fact I will possibly be shot at, but she understands my reasoning. We also have come to the conclusion that we will be moving to either the outskirts of Austin or Houston, much closer to home, which is El Campo. So I will be beginning my new career after we get married, around the start of next year. I know a year is a while to wait for starting a new job, and there may not be positions open, but I am confident it is better to save up for the wedding while I have a solid job than starting an academy that may not be finished until after the wedding, causing me to have to skimp on the honeymoon. Once all of my plans go into action, you'd better believe that I'll be posting it up on the GS. I just ask that y'all keep me and my wife to be in your prayers, cuz regardless of what we plan, it's all in Gods hands.
