    New Political Tax Return Question?

Got my taxes done at Jackson Hewitt yesterday as I have for the past 8+ years. This time they asked me if I would like to donate $3 to the next presidential campaign in the middle of the random household questions? I said who is it going toward? He said he didn't know its just a yes or no question. So I said hell no! Anyone here work for Jackson Hewitt and can clarify on this?? Is there more to the question if I were to have said "yes"? Just seemed a little odd to me as a political donation has nothing to do with my household income tax prep.

That has been a Q on the 1040 for as long as I can remember. Nothing new..... I think the $ amount has risen, used to be a $1 but that was 15 yrs ago.

That question has been on the 1040 since the early 1970's.

yep.. I may be wrong but I think it goes towards a "fund" for public financing of elections

probably not, when I used to work at Jackson Hewitt they told us to just put no there and not to even ask because no one ever said yes

I would ask anyway and out of about 300 returns, I got exactly 0 yeses

Ok sorry thanks for clarifying guys. I guess the past 8+ years they just checked no and didn't bother to ask me.

Never said yes. To my understanding this is to fund the "matching" amounts of political contributions to the presidential candidates. I detest that the highest elected office in the land is become a competition of who has the most money to buy it.
