    Training my pup to track..

I am getting a JRT puppy friday and have been doing research and learning how to train him to trail deer, but I want to hear what real people that I trust have experience in the field's advice. I've done the search on here but I really didn't see anything for someone like me with zero experience in most dog breeds, and no experience in training!

So what I am asking for is advice for someone who has zero experience how to train my puppy JRT how to track. How old before I start training him? How often do I work him? What kind of blood do i use to be most effective? Anything that ya'll had trouble with or anything that will help someone getting started.

start on short easy tracks and dont force him to track- let him follow it and get a good surprise at the end of the 20 yard straight track. Wait a few days and do it again.

Best advice I can give you is if you are going to work the dog on a lead start them on a lead. Mine was about 1/3 of the dog on a lead as he hated being slowed down and his chances of catching up to a still live critter went down. It was my fault for running him off lead as I had plenty of room- folks calling me would be on small tracks and could not afford to let him run.

how old of a puppy? I would start off with basic commands and let him get to know you before you start with the blood. Then you can start with short liver drags with a lot of praise and treats at the end. Then slowly work your way up to longer hard trails. You just don’t want to overdo it on a puppy. I normally use deer blood because I save it throughout the season. I have heard of people using beef blood when they couldn’t find any deer blood.

Hey breeder, hope you don't mind me tagging along your thread but like you, I have zero experience. Jack Russell was my on my short list. I just found a breeder I really liked for the beagle.
