    Anybody Have Experience w Teepees?

I was thinking about building a small bunk house for our country place but then thought a teepee would be far cooler.

Is there a good place to purchase them from?

Is it possible to make your own and it still be practical, materials and cost wise?

        it's gonna be cooler alright

if you are trying to decide between a camphouse and a tent, I'd pick the tent everytime.

Robert Garcia on here made his own. He'd be a good resource.

I plan on putting a wood burning stove in it eventually.

Thanks for the heads up on who to contact.

I have one that my dad had made in the 70's out of sail canvas. Haven't put it up in many years because I don't have poles any more. They're awesome, though. Get one with a liner and you can keep it warm in ANY weather. We used to put it up in Wyoming in the fall and winter and I've slept in it in -10 and been as warm as in a house. The air trapped between the liner and the tipi wall is a great insulator.

Buy a BIG one!! It takes a big tipi to have a decent amount if room.

If you find a place in Texas to get lodge pole pine poles, please PM me the info! I'd love to put mine up for our kids - they've never seen it up.

I bought the past wife one over 15 years ago and the freight on the lodge poles was expensive it had the liners and was quite warm with a small fire until the bull decided to check it out one day and put a rear entrance in it. I bought it from a company out west.

My dad had a 14' and one quite a bit larger (can't remember the diamiter maybe 20') we took them both elk hunting in the 90's late October. May have had 12 hunters or so between the two. His were made of heavy canvas and LOL my dad was going to use EMT conduit for poles and the old man that made the teepee's told him "no way will I sell them to you if you don't make your own pine poles". So, my dad and I cut down pine trees skinned them and the rest was history. Course my dad then cheated somewhat and cut the poles in half and made connectors out of EMT conduit so we could break them down to haul to Colorado on a 12' trailer.

Coolest thing I ever witnessed was at night coming down from the mountain and seeing the teepee's glow wondering if the settlers witnessed something similiar. Really a genius design as a teepee will withstand high winds and with inner lining a great insulator and draft aid for internal fires. Worked great in the mountains just had to clear snow every now and then from the base to get effective draft for fire.
