    The brown part in the center of the teeth is the dentine, and the white part is the enamel. When the teeth wear down to the point that the dentine is wider/larger than the enamel on most of the teeth, the deer is likely 4.5 or 5.5 plus. Although, aging by tooth wear is so imprecise that it's almost laughable. Five biologists will often tell you several different ages on a single jaw. But tooth wear is one of our best methods for aging. Tooth wear can depend on region, vegetation type, soil type, and even left or right side chewing preferences of individual deer. It is far from an exact science.

        2.5- 8.5 really I'd say 5.5-6.5

          I'm going to say 5.5 because there's still a pretty good enamel ridge visible in #5. It could be 6.5 but I don't think so. By then, #5 should look closer to how #4 does in these pix. It's a pretty inexact science and depends a lot on the diet. It's definitely not past 6.5.
