    Question for pool owners

We're getting our pool replastered and are starting the process of getting bids. We have young kids and will be in our house another 10yrs easy, so I'm considering getting the Sunstone/Diamondbrite/Pebble tech type plaster that is guaranteed for 10yrs as opposed to the cheaper plain white plaster. I'm getting bids from a pool builder company, a pool remodeling company, and a company that only does plaster. Each one is offering little things as incentives to get our business. One will redo the mosaics with new tile for free, one will "start up" the pool for free, and the last one is offering an price incentive on the upgrade for the Diamond Brite.

I can work my way through the value and best choice in selecting the best bid, but I am not familiar with the pool "start up". Don't you just fill it with water and add enough to chlorine, acid, and shock to get it balanced? Or is there a special chemical treatment that has to be done after replastering?

They have to give the interior an acid bath. Also, the start up chemicals are not as cheap as you think. Usually around 1200-1500 dollars.

    Where are you located?

If you have leaves or anything that can leave a stain that can get in the pool, I'd have to recommend the pebble or quartz finish. No brainer in my opinion.

I cleaned pools in high school and college and saw it all, lol. We built our pool in 2010 and went with Pebble Tec and it has been a lifesaver regarding stains. We get all kinds of crap in there that doesn't belong and never had an issue. Plant and tree leaves have never left a mark.

Our neighbor has plaster and has small stains all over from oak leaves dropping in the pool. One thing to remember, plaster starts fading the day it's installed, whereas the quartz products are actually rock.

One thing to consider is color, depending on your shade and orientation to the sun. The darker colors look great but get warm in the summer and I do mean warm. I can average 86-91 in August and September. However, we start swimming in mid March and through Halloween. I'd say we get an extra 2 months pool time with a light blue colored finish. I wanted the salt and pepper finish but the wife vetoed that and went a light blue.

      PM with any questions.

I built pools for 12 years. I currently have diamond brite. It's really nice and will last a long time. Start up costs??? Never heard of that. Fill it, vacuum a couple of times and treat

I got mine redone with diamondbright 2 years ago and really like it. As far as start up, he just left the hose with a bottle and tshirt wrapped on the end to keep it from touching the plaster and it took a full day and night to fill the pool. Then he told me to pour muriatic acid around the edges all over the pool. I think it was about 10 or 12 gallons. The next day I started the pump and added my salt bags and all was fine.

Switched off the salt a few months later and back to chlorine tabs so I drained the pool then. "Startup" was merely getting the ph right then doing a normal shock before starting the tablets. Leslie's does my water testing and it looked fine a week later.

Diamondbrite on ours a couple years ago. We had a rough start as when I got home that afternoon there was five guys in the pool with hammers and chisels busting up freshly applied diamondbrite!!! What WHAT!??
The supervisor looks up and sees me and says "don't worry everything will be OK"!
Seems half way through spraying the diamondbrite the hose clogged and before they got it taken care of what they had sprayed had set up. Once they start they have to do all of it so they had to chip up what they had sprayed and start over. What a mess!
Everything turned out fine and all is well so far.
The price included getting the water stable. After it was filled, all 35+K gallons, they poured in 14 gallons of acid!!! (along with the chlorine)They brushed it twice every day for two days and I did four the next week. (no need to go to the gym that week.....what a work out!). I added 6 or 8 more gallons of avid over the next few weeks until it was good.

all a start up is is brush daily for the first week. Checks chems daily as to keep water balanced while whatever finish you use cures. Also I always start up a new replaster with a product called start-up Tec it help keep the plaster dust down. oh if you do go with an aggregate type finish you'll do what's called an acid start up where your ph and alkalinity are low to help expose the aggregate. oh yeah I'm in the biz. to give you an idea I would charge between 450-600 for a start up.

                        I wish I could get 1200-1500 for a startup.

Thanks for all the info. Our pool gets full blast afternoon sun in the summer and gets up to 90 in the afternoon. Probably will get a very light blue color to keep the heat down in the summer. I think we will probably do a diamond Brite type finish since we will definitely get routine use each season for at least the next 10 yrs
