Does anyone know anything about show cattle? This is a steer that I will be showing in about 3 weeks, and was wondering what advice y'all would have for the last push? Any advice helps! He weighted 1300 today.
Thanks, Ryan
Nice looking steer. If you're not already, make sure you wash and work the hair daily, especially brush the leg hair, the best thing is a rotobrush, chucked in a cordless drill(be careful around the tail switch, they don't like their tail wound up in a drill, don't ask me how I know). He is big enough, however, big is not everything, he needs to have a cover of fat over and down his back two ribs, if those rids are prominent and hard, he needs more cover. One of the quickest ways to add fat is put a quart of whole corn in a crockpot, fill with water and cook all night for the morning feeding, then repeat and cook all day for the evening feeding, you will have a crockpot full of what looks like hominy. Cut back on the feed enough to insure he cleans up the cooked corn.
It's a little difficult to tell from the pic, and also he is wet, but he appears to me to be slightly high flanked, if this is the case, you might consider at about 10 days out replacing some of his feed with dried beet pulp began with a double hand full and increase it to two double hands full if he will tolerate it, most do, some don't. It will slowly give him a fuller look.
I showed when I was in 9th and 10th which is over about 10yrs ago...he looks good as far as body size/muscle, may need a hair cut from what I can tell and make sure to use ur show stick to make him "pull up" his back...most judges dont like when there is a small curve...just my 2 cents...I showed Brangus and was always in the top of my class even won grand reserve in my class and reserve over all Good Luck

Yepp. Pull on his flank a little with your show stuck and it'll straighten up the back, make him more appealing. As for feeding, I don't have any advice. Goodluck!
