I thought the same thing when a doe and fawn came walking to me when we met on a trail. The fawn could not get to me fast enough to check out the new bush in the trail. Momma had other ideas. She approached just slightly slower than the fawn, but the last 10 yards she was very nervous. The fawn was about arms length away and the doe got as close as 10 feet. The fawn wanted to get closer but do to momma's nervous nature it backed off. Momma assumed the lead and the fawn quickly followed. I don't think they really knew what I was.
