Every footprint your buddy puts on the ground makes it harder for the dog and reduces your chances of finding it, should you want to call a dog. If he just can not stand not to look himself, have him wear rubber boots, spray them and him down thoroughly and tuck pants into boots. Leave a s little scent as possible so dog will have easier time.
Honestly, I would just call a dog. Doesn't sound like he has the requisite knowledge to track the deer and if recovering it is important to him, a dog would be 100x more effective.
A good dog can track 48 hours or even later; but that's a REALLY good dog and handler. I'd get on the tracking dog list right now and start calling.
Good luck!
even with the rubber boots, everytime the hunter steps in blood that he didnt see, he will put it back down for the next several steps...i am with you, call a dog and stay out of the trail
Did not find it. Dog tracked down a hog that was shot about 3 weeks ago but did not find the deer.
Buddy said they jumped the deer the next day after it was shot. Puddle of blood where it was bedded. It got up and walked off when they got close but didn't run. That was about 2pm the next day. Dog showed up at 9pm that evening and found the hog around 2am. Brought dog back the next morning but no luck finding the deer.
One of the guys took the dog handler to a blood spot he found. Handler told them the dog was acting funny but he would follow. That's how he got on the hog blood. Not sure why they didn't start where the deer was shot or where they jumped it from earlier that day.
False. The blood they started on was the old hog blood that someone found before the dog guy got there, and assumed it was the day old or two day old deer blood. Honest mistake for sure. That dog tracked that hog for over half a mile. Finding blood along the way.
