This is my wife's second season of actually hunting! She's been going with me a long time but since our kids have gotten into hunting and have been successful, she caught the bug too!!!
So the story goes....... We were all down as a family for the week of Thanksgiving and I had this buck on camera coming everyday morning and evening. He was old enough and the right size for her 3rd buck. She looked and said oh my he's wide so I knew she approved. We sat at that blind and of course it took a few hunts for him to show up! He can in first thing that morning and we got a bit nervous! LOL! We got all settled in and she fired the shot! He jumped out of the pen and hauled butt! The shot didn't sound good and after mucho inspection we figured she missed. After a week he showed back up on camera unscathed.
Fast forward to this week. The day after Christmas we made a mad dash to the STX brush to continue her quest. He was now roaming around looking for love and was showing up all over the place. We hunted Thursday evening and Friday morning with no luck and no sightings. I let her make the call on where to set and we were off to the last place he'd been seen last week. I corned the roads, parked and we were just getting settled in the stand when I caught movement way down the sendero behind the feeder. I had for some reason for the first time put corn out behind the feed pen at about 200 yards from the blind because a lot of deer cross back there and never stop nor come to the other corn. This just so happened to work as he stepped out and began to eat! I thought to myself dang I hope I have screwed up putting corn that far for her to shoot! We'll at this time emotions are running high!!! She said "dang I'm not ready for this I didn't think he'd be here this fast"! I did the whole take your time and relax bit but I was shaking and breathing harder than she was!! LOL! We'll after several minutes which seemed like an eternity she pulled the trigger and I new he was hit! He jumped and ran strait away from us humped up, he stopped and started walking away slowly! I reached over and jacked another shell in and told her to shoot again and this time she didn't mess around! When she squeezed he dropped in his tracts!! We we high giving, hugging and kissing like teenagers!!! I'm so proud of her and can't say how happen we were!! She over came the self doubt and confidence issues that missing earlier in the yeR had brought on and got it done!!!
As we started driving to him she said where is he I don't see him and I said he's way up there!! She said oh my goodness I didn't know he was that far, did you know he was that far and I said yes and I was a nervous wreak! She's shooting a 6mm-.284 that has no problem on the distance and put the snake down on this deer! I'm so blessed to now have my entire household (momma and both kids) hooked on hunting!! Nothing can replace this quality time together and I thank the good Lord above for it!
