    Maps for Garmin?

Got a GPSMAP 62s from Santa. I downloaded the free Texas topo maps from gpsfiledepot, but is there anything out there for Texas lakes and bays that's cheaper (or free) than the $100 mapset from Garmin? Really just interested in Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston, and the Galveston and Trinity Bay systems.

Any other tricks or tips? I've always just relied on a compass and my memory, so I have no experience with this satellite doo-dad thingamajig

You can go into google earth and map things out or enable the topo feature on Google earth and do the same thing. Create a .kmz file and then download it to your garmin. I marked every waterhole, saddle, etc on google earth before my scouting trip to Colorado this summer and navigated right to them. Should be able to do the exact same thing with the lakes. Lots of you tube videos to help out.

just dive in.....YOUTUBE is your friend!!
One thing I use a lot is Google Earth....I scope out different areas, water holes ridges I know hold Elk and then enter way points into my Garmin. Then you just set waypoint and Garmin will take you to the exact spot. So hunting now a days with Google earth in the back country is pretty slick. You have to get back to where people are not. GPS sure makes it nice. I always carry 2. Congrats!! enjoy it!!

i use mytopo.com and huntinggpsmaps.com (about 60 bucks i believe). the hunting gps maps gives you all the public and private properties for the state. It may not be as useful for Texas since i know a lot of people hunt private but for NM it's amazing. Helps out a lot for getting into low pressure areas that most people dont ever think of going.
