    Broadheads, mechanical vs fixed

This was my first season bow hunting and I used the 100gr swhacker which seem similar to the rage and some other mechanicals out there.

So my question is what is the main advantage of each one?

I've seen the comments that if you can't make a good shot make a big hole but there has to be more to it than that.

With fixed blades you don't have to worry about them not opening!!! I prefer muzzys

Don't worry to much about stirring the pot as their is ALWAYS somebody that wants it stirred. The search feature is always your friend.

Any BH will get the job done if it is put in the right spot. Rage as an example, will do the job, but because somebody had a bad experience, BOOM, they bashed it.

It's all in preference. I've been bow hunting for 20+ years and shoot both, they both have their good points and bad. I shoot a two bladed Rage now without any problems and have killed around 30 or so deer with them. I use a fixed blade on pigs because thier cheaper along with a cheap arrow. If you hunt behind any mesh screen then you should for sure use a fixed blade, but other that that just shoot what flies best for you and pick small targets.

This debate will go on forever...not your fault.

                    Major differences:
                    Fixed blade:
                    Nothing to go wrong (deploy)
All energy goes into cutting and not opening blades

                    Mechanical blade:
Fly more accurate for most people, this is usually a tuning issue with their bow/arrows and not a broadhead issue though.
Uses more of the arrows energy to due to opening the blades
Usually has a larger cutting diameter than fixed blades

Modern bows have no problem shooting mechanical broadheads; they produce more than enough kinetic energy to deploy the blades and still produce a clean kill.
Many people use them to get a good tune on their arrows; do not do this. If a fixed blade broadhead doesn't hit with your field tips you need to tune the arrow/bow.

There is nothing wrong with either style; it is what you prefer to shoot, that's all.

                    Follow your folly...

                      Well said.

Have had great experiences the rage hypo this year and for a fixed blade I shoot ramcats. I have shot three deer this year with the hypo and have got complete pass throughs on all three. Two of which were sticking into the ground on the other side.

Fixed blade for me. I've hunted on a few ranches that won't even allow mechanicals. One owner even had some Zwickeys for sale to guys who only showed up with mechanical BHs.

2 for 2 with the Swacker. I got a pass through on a small spike quartering away, no blood at all. I buried one to the vanes on a quartering away 150 pound hog, had a great blood trail.

Mechanical for my Matthews and fixed for my Recurve. Shot placement is everything. All you need to do is break that internal diaphragm. Both do the job. Just preference.
