    The Official Coon Hunting Thread

I can't remember the first time I sat in a deer stand. I can't remember the first time I went fishing. I can't remember the first time I went hog hunting, I can remember with 100% clarity my first coon hunt though.

My dad had a Walker dog, and a Redbone gip named Penny. Dad, me, a couple of his buddies, and one of their sons loaded up and treed a few in the Angelina River bottom. It went into my blood. Dad and I hunted them hard until I was about 12 or 13 then Penny died. She had a heart attack treeing a coon and dad never got another dog.

I've been wanting to get back into it for years and just the other day, a buddy called and said he had a 5 year old Plott gip that needed a good home to someone that would hunt her. I became that guy! She's started on coons but will need some work. The dog ain't the only one that will need some work, I have no idea what I'm doing. So I'm starting this thread for myself and those like me that may need a little insight.

Post up training techniques, cool equipment, must do's and must dont's, pictures, hunting stories etc. Basically anything that has anything to do with coon hunting!

Yes sir, you nailed it! Most nights we didn't even shoot the coons out. We would let the dogs tree a while, pet them up, and head back to the house. There weren't a lot of coons back then, we just went to work the dogs.

Don't let that hound run past someone's game cam on here. You will get crucified. The thread will be named " My no good neighbor ran his coon hounds on my place and spoked all the deer away" I used to run dogs all the time but when the old timers sold out and all the places got chopped up into 10 acre ranches it just made it so hard to hunt with dogs. The dogs I had couldn't read those posted signs and it became more hassle than fun. I do miss coon hunting. We went to the State hunt in Fairfield every year it was lots of fun good luck with it.

I grew up following hounds with my dad. Here he is with one nights catch near Ft. McKavate circa 1963. 32 coons

I was just thinking about coonhunting with my dad when I was young kid. I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 when he took me. We lived out on some land where lake Ray Hubbard is now. The end of the breakwater by the power-plant is where our front yard was. The whole Trinity river bottom was a half a mile away from us. I still remember all the men I hunted with. My dad had a Black and Tan named 'Paco" and a Blue-Tic named "Lady." My uncle John had an assortment of dogs...Rowdy, Stew, Bones, Railhead. We hunted with my uncle Jerry Mac, HL and Little HL. Mr. Brown was a WW 1 Veteran that would not carry a spotlight, but carried a coal-oil lantern and a small can of coal-oil. He would build a small fire everywhere we stopped and listen to the dogs run. I may have only been 5 or 6 years old, but I can still remember alot about those days. Take a kid hunting.....they will remember it for life.

I'll chime in on this later when I get home. Phone typing is too slow.

My dad was a coonhunter if there ever was one. I chased hounds for several years growing up.

Good sport to be involved in if you've got a place for the dogs and the time to train and hunt.

I've got some old school pics at home.

That has always looks like something that would be a blast to me. It has really intrigued me since reading "where the red fern grows" at 9-10 years old. Growing up in Hartley County part of the mystery might have been the fact that there wasn't a tree in the County LOL!
