Tips and Tricks for help a kid

I need some ideas on how to teach my 14yo to study. He has always been a great student. He started high school this year and some of the advanced classes are putting him to the test. He has never had to study before and I honestly have n clue how to teach him.

I have him taking note in class and his notes are really good quality and organized yet he is still struggling in a couple of classes.

What can I do to help him.

Give him one area that he uses to study! Also have him study a little each night instead of waiting until test time and trying to stay focused for a longer period of time! Make flash cards from his notes can also help! Might try reading about AVID!

on the subjects that require reading...sit down next to him....you read to paragraphs, then he reads the next two...back and forth.... then he has time to think and ask..and still be part of more than just him....

I read, and I highlight the main points in each paragraph as I go. Then I go back and go over the highlighted stuff again, maybe a couple of times.

It's got to click with him there is nothing you can can do to force it. Everybody learns a different way. I've been there with myself and watching my son and my wife is a teacher. The want has to be there. Good luck.

I made my kids write out what they were studying. Some times when just reading you don't have full concentration therefore less comprehension. If you write it out you think about what your writing then word recognition kicks in. Worked on my 3 they all finished with no lower than 3.5 GPA and my two step sons do it, one in college one a Sr in HS and he has a 3.9 GPA.
Was how I always studied, and seems to still work.

              Good luck

I learned best by teaching others. We would study in groups and I always wrote on the board. Outlining history or working through math problems. Sitting and reading or studying never worked.

Get him to teach you what he is learning. Being in a position where you have to know enough to teach causes you to learn mor in depth and have a fuller understanding.

when i had to read long chapters, i would put gummy bears down after each paragraph. thats how i learned how to comprehend things

What classes are they in if you don't mind me asking. If it's math, then tutoring would be best. I take it he's a freshmen, so for IPC, Geography/history, English, I agree with writing down the notes from the book.
