    iPhone 5 use in the Dominican Republic?

    We're leaving Monday for the DR and I would like to be able to listen to the music on my phone without incurring expensive roaming and media charges. I had a couple of ideas;

    #1 Leave it on Airplane Mode

    #2 Remove the SIM card

    Could an iPhone expert tell me if either of these would work and still allow me to access music, pictures, camera, etc. without the charges of leaving the phone active? Thanks!

    Turn on airplane mode, if theres wifi available you can then turn that feature on without using data, playing music etc while on airplane mode wont affect data usage

        Thanks Kirk & Mary! After all this ice I'll be ready to hit the beach & drink fruity cocktails for a week!

          well if you need to make calls/texts airplane mode makes it hard.

          You just have to turn off cellular data so you don't use any. Still can take and make calls that way.

            We turned off the data on ours and just used the wifi at the resort. That allowed us to facetime with family. Your carrier will send you a text message when you land that will tell you how much calls and texts cost. My wife sent a few texts and I don't remember it being very much.

              I don't plan on sending any texts or emails unless I'm on the resort's Wifi, so would Airplane Mode or turning off Cellular Data be the better option?

                Went there for a mission trip in '04. We were told to leave all phones in airplane mode. I would love to go back someday, beautiful place and people. Have fun!

                    You can have your wifi on while in Airplane mode. Turning off cellular data wouldn't hurt either but if you don't need to use your phone at all just put it in airplane mode and use the Wifi.

                      Yep. The only reason I don't is because I usually need to take calls when I'm out of the country. Other than that airplane mode is fine.
