A 48-year-old Cedar Park man was arrested Wednesday for critically injuring his girlfriend's dog by shooting the animal with a bow and arrow.
Kenneth E. Holder was arrested Wednesday morning for the May 18 incident, Cedar Park Police Department spokesman Capt. Jeff Hayes said. Holder faces charges of cruelty to animals. He is being held at the Williamson County Jail with bail set at $5,000.
At 6:30 p.m. May 18, Cedar Park police were called to a home on North Kings Canyon Drive where a "highly intoxicated" Holder told officers he'd been bitten by the dog — a German shepherd/Labrador retriever mix — while trying to wash it outside, Hayes said.
After the dog bit Holder, he went into the house, had a number of alcoholic beverages, police said, and waited an hour before he went outside to shoot the dog with a bow and razor-tipped hunting arrow, critically injuring the animal.
When police arrived, the dog was still alive but had to be euthanized later in the day as a result of the injuries, Hayes said.
He added that it took more than a week to arrest Holder because police had to investigate the matter and issue a warrant for Holder's arrest.
If convicted, Holder could be sentenced to up to two years in prison for cruelty to animals, which is a state jail felony.
