My fiancé and I are trying to figure out what we wanna do for our honeymoon. Ideally we would want to go on a mule deer hunt or an elk hunt in Texas. But we are probly only going to have $2500ish to spend on the honeymoon. Neither one of us has ever hunted elk or mule deer. So pretty much either one with horns would be awesome (as we know for sure we aren't getting trophies for $2500). My question is, is it possible to get a hunt where we could each kill mule deer or elk in this price range?

DIY hunt, absolutely! But it won't be honeymoon type, unless she really likes the outdoors.

Do it yourself...literally
Put in for tags(party app to ensure you both get the same season/area). When you draw, do the research and look for the best area to hunt.
Get some good gear if you don't have it already.
Hike in and have a fun camping trip. Find some deer and go to town.
You have the biggest thing down, your bride is wiling to do it. If she is willing to hike in and rough it with only whatever she is wearing and whatever fits in her pack, that is.
Buy the books "Backcountry Bowhunting" by Cameron Hanes and "Public Land Muleys" by David Long. These are worth their weight in gold and will get you further than any guide if you are truly wanting DIY. Muleys aren't that complicated to figure out...its just going where the deer want to hide that kills most people's motivation.
Get in shape, get in shape, get in shape!
Most guides are just going to drive you around until you see a buck, then get out and go shoot it. Kind of boring! You will have a better perspective of hunting and more admiration for your trophys on the wall if you hiked in a few miles, killed it in the middle of no where, and brought it out on your back. I know I do.
Just be forwarned....elk and muleys are no walk in the park. Completely different from WTs.
If you are looking at Nevada, let me know. I live and hunt here. I also have the draw system figured out. I can put you on the deer.Last edited by Bowhuntamistad; 12-05-2013, 08:48 PM.
