Headed to Hondo on Thursday night with 2 goals 1 to get my youngest son his first doe then possibly a buck and 2 to get my 9 year old a doe with his bow. Friday morning sitting w/ the 5 year old we saw a big mature 8 but would have been a difficult shot for him so we passed. next couple of hunts were uneventful but Saturday evening we decided first doe was going down and after about an hour single doe came out got set up and the boy raises his head off the scope looking very nervous and says tell me again were to aim. I know he has the fever because he has pointed it out to me a hundred times in magazines and photos. I pull up some shot placement photos on google and we confirm target. In the mean time the doe takes off so we have to wait for another 1/2 hour or so and this time he seals the deal high fives, hugs, and a call to momma are in order. Wow the boy is beaming with pride. The next morning we are looking for a mature buck and seeing a ton of youngsters. The boys talk me into staying to hunt Sunday evening and man am I glad they did. We are watching the young buck feed and Mo says there is a buck and he ran behind that tree but he's probably not old enough anyway. When the buck came around the corner my jaw dropped. Mo was asking if we could shoot him and when I went for the gun he lite up. After what seemed like an hour he finally gave us a good broadside shot and boom it was over. I'm not for letting little guys take monster bucks for their first but could let this buck walk. In the 9 years on our lease this is the biggest buck we have seen. Couldn't be prouder of my little man.
