Great hunt yesterday morning with a couple buddies. Duck hunting was slow so I got the Burnham Brothers Compucaller III and we got after the coyotes. The big male came in on a string and it was awesome to watch from our elevated position along an old overgrown fenceline. We saw him from about 400 yards off and he responded to a series of rabbit sounds and lip squeaks to seal the deal.
He didn't charge in but came in cautiously. When he got to about 80 yards I told my buddy to whack him. He shot him and he tumped over the back of a small ravine he crossed. We went to look for him and all we found was blood and bone. No yote. Followed the blood trail until we lost it but we knew he was hit good. We spread out and started walking. After about 5 min my buddy yelled "there he goes"! I see him about 350 yards away running on 3 legs. And I start sprinting after him. Chased him into an open pasture and was out of breath at this point. Figured this was as close as I would get. Missed the first shot at 250 yards but the 2nd from the STI .223 rolled him up for good. First kill with this gun. Absolutely love it.
Started calling again and it wasn't long before the female came in. My buddy got her a little more effectively with a clean head shot. Great morning! Got a couple ducks and the dog some work and hammered a couple yotes. I am sure the rancher will be pleased seeing as how he lost a calf to them last week.
