I was fortunate enough to put a good buck down last weekend so I wanted to concentrate on trying to get my youngest son Jake on his first deer. He is 6 and we tried several times last year but just could never close the deal.
Fast forward to this year....we left Thursday after dinner and made the run to Foard County. My dad drove down from Tulsa to spend the weekend with us and he brought his pop-up blind. We just jacked around camp Friday morning and went out about 3:30 that afternoon and set the blind up about 40 yards from my feeder and got settled in. I wasn't too confident as I haven't been seeing much come into the feeder with the rut going on. To my surprise though about 5 o'clock a big doe came in and started munching on the corn.
She fed with her but to us for about 10 minutes but Jake did a real good job staying calm and watching her through the scope. She slowly started quartering away from us a bit so I reached up and took the safety off the rifle. As soon as i got it off, she turned perfectly broadside and Jake said, "Daddy, do you want me to kill her?". I told him to put the cross hairs right behind her shoulder and squeeze the trigger.
I saw the bullet hit her right above the elbow and she was down in about 20 yards. Needless to say the blind like to have came apart with me, Jake, and his Grandpa Tom jumping up and down. I can't tell ya how awesome it was to have 3 generations sitting in the blind when Jake killed his first deer.
