I shot my first bobcat with a bow earlier this season and was looking for some advice on what product to use to tan it. I've trapped a lot when I was younger around the Great Lakes area and have prepared many hides but usually sold them raw not tanned. I've tanned a few mink and other fur bearers but that was a long time ago. I looked on line and did some research on products but there are many choices a claiming to be the best. Any advice on wich product works the best and wich are the easiest to use would be appreciated.

I spent seven years of my life tanning cattle hides (1000 to1500 a day) but I'm a bit clueless about furs and skins. They are pretty delicate and have to be treated tenderly. Keep the thing cold until you are ready to tan and watch temperatures if there is a washing involved. Enzymes need about 110F to work and skin slip can occur at maybe 120F. My guess is that you will buy a product that is an alum tan. All of my work was done using chrome which turns the leather blue. Alum is used for baseballs and yields a white colored leather and of course vegetable tannins yield tans, golds, and brown leathers.
