Noah is 7 and has hunted pretty hard for the last two years. He had a few opportunities last year, but couldn't seal the deal. Well, this afternoon he made the most of an opportunity.
We were sitting in a ground blind we call "The Front Field" stand and this long horn spike comes waking into our set up. Before he got to us he veered off behind a thicket. Deer that take that route either head south to the bottom or west across an opening toward another thicket.
I was watching him with my binos and saw him heading west. We hustled to get Noah turned I his right and set up to get a shot when the deer got to the opening. He hopped in my lap, we set the .243 on his shooting sticks, and the deer poked his head out at 40 yards and looks our way. He takes a few more steps into the opening and I "meh" I stop him and Noah squeezed the trigger.
The bullet found its mark and the deer dropped in his tracks.
