    Lease hunting

Just curious on how you guys found your deer leases. Seems like in my area NE Texas that finding a lease is like finding bigfoot. That is unless I want to go hunt in Oklahoma where there are plenty of places. How do you guys do it and how early should I start looking for 2014?

Someone already posted a lease wanted thread today and got a hit in less than thirty minutes. Never too early! Haha

I found out we were loosing our lease in spur two years ago. It's 4 hrs from my house. So the next weekend I headed for the lease stopping at every coffee shop, whataburger , cafe , Feedstore, tractor shop, farm &ranch store , Waffle House , well you get the picture. I asked every old timer I came across if they had land for lease or knew of anyone that did. Took me 11hrs to get to my lease that day, but it payed off. We have a new lease with awesome landowners and hopefully we will have this place for my kids kids. And our deer are way bigger than the last place. Amazing what a difference 18 miles will do.

      Good luck!

East Texas is different. I haven't cracked the code either. Its like you offend people when you ask to lease their land.

Found my current one this way. Previous ones found through coworkers and friends

It's never too early to start looking. Most annual leases might not be up until march or April, but it's best to get your name in the pot now !

The family land on the Colorado was getting too small with 2 homes being built and too many cousins hunting on it.

On the way to Fiesta I saw my lawyer buddy out in his front yard "working" (piddlin) and stopped to say "Hi". In the conversation I asked him to let me know if he hears of any land opening up for hunting around Fayetteville where he grew up on the farm. He offered me his land as the dentist hunter on his land was not going to renew.

It's a small spot of land on Cummins Creek but is a funnel between two large masses of woods. I like it because we see lots of deer and it's less than 1.5 hrs from the house.

No doubt, got lucky on that one. This is our 8th season. It's kinda in the sticks but "Joe's" restaurant and sportsbar on the square is just 6 miles away, LOL.

I'm to ADD to deer hunt in E Tx. It would be like punishment after hunting in the hill country. Pig hunting, well thats a different story.

Good leases stay full by word of mouth and usually have a waiting list. Advertised leases are usually looking for folks for a reason, that has been my experience.

I'm getting to the point where I'm just going to ask land owners if I can hunt the land for a few days during bow season... it's crazy how much you have to pay if you want a 100 acre plot for a year.. I haven't seen anything under 1000

Haha man I wish I had that luck. I posted looking for a lease and have gotted nothing. Im not even looking for a strict area lol just anywhere within a 4 hour drive from Houston lol. Still looking btw....no lease for 3 years makes for pretty thin hunting opportunities

I've found a couple good ones I plan on calling people soon from a website called leasehunter.com! I'm looking for a lease for the 2014 year also.
