    Can someone identify this snake?

Caught it a few hours ago. It was pretty docile at first and easy to catch. But was pretty irritated and was trying to strike after I put it in the aquarium. He can vibrate his tail, but only makes noise when it touches something. I don't see any rattles. Can anyone tell me what kind of snake I have? Thanks

I'd say rat snake as well.....neighbor just caught one in a "rat trap" a few weeks ago and made me get it out for him.

Did it emit a nasty musty odor when you put it in the container? If so you may have caught a Diamondback water snake. I had never heard of them until I had to try to find an id for a snake I had to relocate. We had one fall out of a large fern at our credit union and one of our tellers nearly had a heart attack when the little booger tried to kill everyone in the place. Very aggressive and stinky little guy.

cornsnake, ratsnake, chicken snake. they are actually different snakes but all cousins and are all harmless. this one looks to be a juvinile. they shake their tale so that it will vibrate leaves and dried grass so that they sound like a rattle snake. pretty clever little mofo's.

Grey rat snake. Will do well in captivity if you decide to keep it. Shoot sparrows with bb gun and wire the foot and drop it into cage. Shake the bird a little and the snake will catch it and wrap around it as you pull the wire off the bird's foot. They're constrictors. Or you could buy mice at Wal-mart.
