Using a pickup as a blind

Darndest thing yesterday - while hunting with my daughter, we parked the truck near the corner of a large field and snuck into a hidey hole overlooking another small field about 200 yards away. Well, that spot filled up with cows, so we decided to go back and watch the field at last light, even though the truck was parked in the corner of it.

Lo and behold, with us just sitting there leaning against the front bumper, about 10 deer came out and fed into that field between 150 and 250 yards away, never even so much as looking over at the pickup, or us.

Granted, it was fading light, but they were West of us, so they had the better view. Had we just been standing there, I'm sure they would have spotted us and bolted.

It never ceases to amaze me how it seems I can park my vehicle just about anywhere I want, and the deer will all but walk on by it. My daughter and I just laughed and said we're just going to hunt out of the pickup bed from now on. ha, ha.

    Deer. You gotta love em.

Doesn't surprise me. They see trucks/cars all the time and don't associate it with danger.

When I decide to kill a deer its usually off the tractor. Or truck.
Deer aren't afraid of them on the ranch

Guess it depends where you are. I had a couple doe come out about 80 yards from me. they worked their way closer to my stand to where one of them saw my jeep parked in the brush (about 20 yards away). She looked at it for about 2 seconds and bolted into the woods. She came back out and quickly walked over to the other doe and the high tailed out of there.

I regularly have deer walk within 20-30 yards of my truck at a farm I hunt.

I have seen an unusual thing happen. With the pickup sitting at the edge of a field with the flashers working, I have seen deep come out and walk toward the flashing lights. I don't know if they are attracted to the flashers or they are just interested in what is going on. I have been told that you can call deer to you by using flashers. I do believe that it is true.

My ranch dosn't have a lot of trucks driving the roads regularly. I have had young deer stomp, snort at my truck. Its funny to see.

                      ha, ha. Nice slick!

I'm seriously thinking of just parking my pickup, laying down the tailgate, and laying in the back with my daughter so she can shoot her 243 from the prone position. She's shot 4-h rifle for years, so that's a very familiar position for her to shoot from anyway. I'm betting it would work!

If it is cold outside, I hunt out of the truck all of the time. I get it nice and toasty in there and just sit back and watch. Let me just say more than one buck has been shot using this method.

, judging by this weekends forecast, might be hunting out of it this weekend.

People do it all the time in east Texas but the truck is usually moving.
