check out this funky looking redfish

I have seen bass like that in fresh water. I think they were injured by a large bird when they were little and somehow recovered and survived. The back bone had to have been injured somehow.

That's one freaky looking red! I think I would have had Buckwild mount it had I caught it.

At the Forth Worth Japanese Water Gardens, there are about ten or so koi that look just like that --

they seem to be fine -- just funky.

Never seen one like that, but have seen them with a chunk missing, usually out of their back like something tried to eat them.........

It is scoliosis, thought to be caused from a vitamin C deficiency. If you use orange colored baits, you'll catch a bunch of them !

Yup. Scoliosis is correct. I raise fish for a living and I've seen a bunch of them like that (usually much smaller fish than the pic). I always wondered if they would survive to adulthood. I guess at least some of them make it.

Something else I learnt on TBH

Fish can get scoliosis?? Viatimin C comes from plants. How do fish that only eat other fish get it?? It can't be in the other fish they eat it would be used in that fishes motabolism.

                      Just trying to learn here.

My guess is that that fish was started in one of the coastal hatcheries. They get started on a commercial feed (which is tested for protein and vitamins) but there may have been a bad batch of feed. Fish gets scoliosis early in life, gets released into the wild, never recovers from the scoliosis = funky looking adult fish. I'm just surprised no predators got it.
