    Cull Buck with Rage

I have used Rage broadheads in the past so not here to bash them like elkbowhunter
But... shot this buck at 18 yards with 65lb Mathews and while I was looking
for him he was at another feeder 1/2 mile away. Still getting pics so he's still alive and well. Any ideas on what may have happened?

a few questions if I may

    1. Do you still shoot Mathews?
    2. Arrow weight/draw length/and bow you used

Wow.....looks like it hit a rib and didn't penetrate
He needed a couple more years anyways, call it a sign.

If it's a light arrow and an expandable 2 blade, I think they have serious penetration issues, same for the NAP Killzone. That's why I like the Grim Reaper and NAP Spitfire Maxx.

Yes hes young but no brows landowner said take him.
Not sure on arrow weight but 29" draw. That was a 3 blade bh with Mathews Reezen
which I have killed several deer and hogs with. Think I will at least switch to 2 blade ext. or hypodermic.

I'm just giving you a hard time about the Mathews. What kind of arrows and spine is that? Has the bow been tuned? Those can also make a difference on penetration.

The fact of the matter is, when they work, they work great. But there's enough times they haven't to make me not want to use them. One thing I've learned over the last 2 years: hunting isn't 3D shooting. Deer aren't static targets, they move. They can: jump a string/arrow, take a step right when you shoot, hear something else and spook at your shot. All those things can lead to an arrow getting way less than desirable penetration. So if you use a broad head that takes a lot of momentum to open on a perfectly still target, what happens when the arrow encounters bone, deer movement, weak spine or an untuned bow? You end up with **** poor penetration IMO. Under a perfect scenario they're probably fine, I want a broad head and arrow that is going to work when I don't make the perfect shot or the deer screws up my perfect shot by moving

When they work they work but when they don't well this is what happens.

I Lost the biggest buck I have ever shot with a bow due to this. And I shoot a 31.5"'draw and 72#'s and plenty heavy arrow!

Beeman ICS 340 are 9.3 GPI, a fairly heavy arrow, you're looking at around 400 grains with a 100 grain broad head. I'm scratching my head here....that should have been a passthrough under perfect conditions. Your spine is stiff enough too...not sure man.
