    Plumbing ?

What would cause my hot water heater to make a hammering or rumbling noise when we shutoff a hot water faucet to our main bathroom. We only notice this happening when we turn off this specific hot water faucet (bathtub). We don't notice it when the hot water to the sink or shower is turned off. Also, we don't hear this noise when we turn on the faucet and during flow. It only happens at shutoff. Any advice??

    Water hammer or steam hammer.
Happens when the cold water hits the hot water in the heater and expands.

I just made that up.... Ha

Cause you are overheating the water, the real question is, what do you need to heat hot water for?

So if the water is overheating, then why does turning off a specific faucet cause this and not just any hot water faucet? So what's the solution? Stop heating hot water lol

Choke it down some with the cut off. Could be to much volume and being cut off to fast.

Thermal Expansion occuring . Install / or replace Watts pt-5 (or larger) expansion tank to the cold side of the water heater.

Sediment in the bottom off the tank traps small bubbles of air. When they heat up and expand they pop.

When you turn the water off suddenly it makes many little air pockets pop.

Not really a big deal but can be a sign of age. Drain the tank a few times to remove as much crud as possible. You will not get it all.

Thanks. I'm not much on plumbing but it seems strange if this is a water heater tank issue then why is this only occurring when we shut off the hot water side to the bathtub?? One thing though it's quite possible this is the closest shutoff to the hot water heater. The bathroom sink is adjacent but still the actual piping length to the tub could be the shortest.

The tub and or shower have a higher volume or flow rate than any other hot water fixture or faucet. More water is moving so when it suddenly stops the pressure spikes in your water piping and water heater and the bubbles pop.

This will probably work with your hot water on the clothes washing machine.

Why the cold side? Doesn't expansion happen in the whole system?
