    Mule deer experts need advice.

With my coaching career coming to a close I plan on spending a lot of time hunting out west. I am starting to plan a mule deer hunt and would like to hunt from the end of August until about Sept 15 before the elk rut. Im currently looking in Colorado but will be applying in other states as well. I am aware of high country above timberline and willow basins and if I can draw a unit that has those that would be great. My question is if above timberline is not an option what would be your second choice of habitat to hunt mule deer in that early September time frame.

The canyon country of western Colorado and eastern Utah.

When you say canyon country could you specify habitat ? In other words
      Pinion-juniper, aspens , etc ...

Try some of the oak brush area that are around 8000 ft. elevation. Some units in Colorado are hard to draw mule deer tags without preference points. Above timberline is tough. A guided hunt might be your solution.

Thanks. Ill star checking those out. Looking at building my preference points in several states and in the mean time hunt some of the pretty much 100% draw areas.

Anybody else ???. I'm not feeling the love from the mule deer hunters.

Head to the Gunnison Basin & hunt the quakies. There's a reason most of the gov tag deer come from there.

Just not a whole lot of muley lovin on this site. The number one targeted animal on this site is whitetails with pigs in a close second. I really can't give you much advise on hunting them out West or in the mountains as all of the ones I have seen or killed have been of the desert variety in the trans pecos region. I will say that one of the biggest muleys I have seen on the hoof was 7 years ago in the Gilas really perty deer. We just happened to be in the right place at the right time on a camping trip.

I would look at wyoming, idaho and montana and utah as well. You will have to do a bunch of research. I try to do a mulie western diy hunt every yr. Started 3 yrs ago. Each state is so different on pts, tags, season, etc. Not many people seem to give out much advice on most public sites. Use the states game and fish website for the stats. Im not any help on where to go bc of my lack of experience. Ive been to az twice (bow), new mexico (rifle) and wyoming (rifle) w limited success. Good luck

Thanks I'll check it out. I am planning on looking at all those states as well. I don't want anyone's secret spots. Half of the fun to me is doing the research. I just was just wondering about habitat.
