With my coaching career coming to a close I plan on spending a lot of time hunting out west. I am starting to plan a mule deer hunt and would like to hunt from the end of August until about Sept 15 before the elk rut. Im currently looking in Colorado but will be applying in other states as well. I am aware of high country above timberline and willow basins and if I can draw a unit that has those that would be great. My question is if above timberline is not an option what would be your second choice of habitat to hunt mule deer in that early September time frame.

Anybody else ???. I'm not feeling the love from the mule deer hunters.

I would look at wyoming, idaho and montana and utah as well. You will have to do a bunch of research. I try to do a mulie western diy hunt every yr. Started 3 yrs ago. Each state is so different on pts, tags, season, etc. Not many people seem to give out much advice on most public sites. Use the states game and fish website for the stats. Im not any help on where to go bc of my lack of experience. Ive been to az twice (bow), new mexico (rifle) and wyoming (rifle) w limited success. Good luck

Thanks I'll check it out. I am planning on looking at all those states as well. I don't want anyone's secret spots. Half of the fun to me is doing the research. I just was just wondering about habitat.
